South Africa – End of Transnet Strike

28 May 2010

Hapag-Lloyd informs about the situation in the South African ports

Please be informed that we received the confirmation from the National port authority, National rail operator and National container terminal operator of South Africa, Transnet, that the three-week long strike between the union parties, Satawu and Utatu, and Transnet has been settled yesterday, May 27th 2010. Workers have returned back to work since this morning and terminals are working again, even if not up to full speed yet.
The strike obviously has caused a huge back-log of cargo which either could not be shipped out of South Africa or needed to be diverted to other discharge ports as vessels by-passed South African ports. We are estimating that the clean-up of the back-log will take a couple of weeks until the situation is back to normal. Due to the additional operational costs which Hapag-Lloyd experienced as a consequence of the strike, the announced Congestion Surcharge of USD 105 per TEU for all Import- and Export shipments will stay in place until further notice.
We will keep you informed about any further developments.
