Environmental Protection on Board our Ships

岸上环境

As one of the largest shipping lines in the world, a large part of active environmental protection takes place on board our modern container vessels. Our commitment to the environment does not end there. Environmental issues are also very important in our more than 320 offices in 130 countries. For example in 2008 new printers were installed in our offices worldwide that print double sided as standard setting and also consume considerably less toner and power.

Experienced stowage planners ensure that the vessel has proper trim in the water

State-of-the-art technology assists in stowage planning and continuously monitors trim and stability while later at sea. This ensures that the vessel has a proper trim in the water, optimizes fuel consumption, and increases safety on board. The intelligent software warns our experienced stowage planners well in advance should the planned stowage lead to risks. In addition, the software also checks during stowage planning whether all hazardous goods regulations are being followed.

Our sophisticated Yield Management System avoids empty container moves

Our worldwide container fleet of more than 1.1 million TEU is steered by our sophisticated Yield Management System reducing the number of empty container moves worldwide. Fewer empty containers moves on land and at sea result in lower emissions

Priority is given to environmentally friendly modes of transport

Environmentally friendly modes of transport such as inland waterways, feeder vessels, and rail have priority when organizing pre- and on-carriage transport. This reduces both emissions and the pressure exerted on the road system in busy and congested regions.

我们参与全球资源保护

Hapag-Lloyd is a member of various associations, national and international working groups as well as research groups. These groups take an active role to conserve global resources. For ex-ample, we are a member of the Clean Cargo Working Group, a section of the US “Business for Social Responsibility” (BSR) organization. The members consist of numerous major shipping lines in addition to globally active trading companies and producers. The Clean Cargo Working Group works to investigate, optimize, and reduce the ecological and social impacts during the exchange of goods worldwide.

Hapag-Lloyd also works with public institutions such as the European Union, the German Federal Transport Ministry, and universities on a regular basis to work on various research projects.

We closely cooperate with our industrial partners such as engine manufacturers and shipyards to develop environmentally friendlier technologies. Prototypes on our ships are tested on a parallel basis. Hapag-Lloyd has always aimed at being the first shipping line to deploy these technologies in our daily operations. In cooperation with industry associations such as the Institute of International Con-tainer Lessors (IICL), and the Container Owners Association (COA), Hapag-Lloyd endeavours to develop innovative container standards.

Among others, Hapag-Lloyd initiated the Container Shipping Information Service (CSIS). This service informs the world about the container shipping industry, and displays the benefits that it brings to our everyday lives. Other key topics on CSIS are environmental and security issues, innovations, and globalisation.

E-Solutions are our way of protecting the environment and securing high quality

E-Business

For years Hapag-Lloyd has systematically developed the electronic handling of its business processes (e-Business). The latest innovation we offer our customers, who are not on a fixed link to our electronic systems, is an intelligent PDF document for shipping instructions that can be sent by e-mail. E-Business promotion in all areas makes processes easier, more convenient and error-free in addition to considerable reducing paper consumption, for our business partners and at Hapag-Lloyd.

E-Learning

Effective quality assurance and environmental protection, ongoing staff development, and regular refreshers are essential. From 2006 numerous online training programmes have been available for our staff on a worldwide basis.
These web-based training modules are on the Hapag-Lloyd Intranet and range from Office applications, and language courses to department specific training for example, handling dangerous goods. Some online programmes are mandatory for all our staff. Security awareness for defence against maritime threats is included. These trainings ensure high quality work in all areas and reduces business travel.

E-Meetings

Hapag-Lloyd is an internationally active company that regards personal contact between its worldwide staff members as essential. With respect for the environment, we try to limit business travel, especially by air, to a reasonable and required level. Besides the familiar telephone con-ferences, e-meetings are very helpful. These Internet link-ups, assist staff to work jointly on pro-jects and have access to each other’s documentation.
