High Cube Road Transportation Regulations South Africa
15 Dec 2009
Hapag-Lloyd informs about important actual developments in South Africa.
• Transport regulations in South Africa consider a High Cube (9'6" high) Container being transported on a standard chassis as being an abnormal load.
• For the last several years a moratorium has been in place regarding this regulation which has not been enforced.
• Last Week the KwaZulu Natal Department of Transport (DOT) took it upon themselves to apply the legislation as written and ignore the moratorium.
• The South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAF) as well as The Road Freight Association (RFA) have made urgent applications to the Minister of Transport requesting immediate reinstatement of the moratorium.
• All Shipping Lines (including Hapag-Lloyd) through the local South African Association of Ship Operators and Agents (SAASOA) have also given their full support to this application.
• As of this morning (Tuesday 15th of December) there has been no response from the minister and some trucks with High Cube containers have been pulled off the roads by the Traffic Police and impounded.
• On this basis and until further notice High Cube containers can only be transported on low bed trailers. It should be noted though that these are very scarce and more expensive.
• Hapag-Lloyd is continuously monitoring the situation with our local subcontractors and will update all concerned as the situation develops.
