Certificates

Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System (ISO 9001 + ISO 14001)

Our ISO 9001 and 14001 certification has again successfully been renewed by Germanischer Lloyd! The certificate is valid until June 21st, 2015.

Responsibility is our tradition: In 1994 Hapag-Lloyd was the first shipping company who had certified all its worldwide activities according to ISO quality standards. By 1996 binding environmental guidelines were formulated.  In 2003 a certification according to environmental standards was added to the already existing ISO quality standard. Both systems were combined to our integrated Quality and Environmental Management System (ISO 9001 + ISO 14001) and since then have continuously been updated. Our ISO certificate includes all activities of Hapag-Lloyd's worldwide organisation.

GL Excellence - 5 Stars

In 2007 we were the first container shipping line worldwide to be certified with the newly established standard “GL Excellence - 5 Stars”. This standard encompasses multiple criteria and calls for the implementation of health and safety measures (Occupational Health and Safety), certification in line with ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), ISM Code (International Safety Management) and ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security) for the prevention of maritime danger. New on the one hand is that the essential requirements have been consolidated, and on the other hand include requirements that go far above and beyond these international standards and regulations.

Lately, our “GL Excellence - 5 Stars” certificate has successfully been renewed by Germanischer Lloyd; the certificate is valid until December 20th, 2013.

Hapag-Lloyd a trailblazer for the new EEDI

Beginning of 2012, Hapag-Lloyd became the first shipping company in the world to have its entire own-managed fleet certified in accordance with the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The independent certification shows that many vessels in the Hapag-Lloyd fleet have an EEDI that is between 20 and 27% better than the average figure for the active global fleet in their respective classes. This means that these vessels emit significantly less CO2 than the average of the world fleet. Hapag-Lloyd has the new certification before it becomes mandatory. The IMO, who developed the new CO2-index, will soon make it compulsory for all merchant ship newbuildings. It will make the energy efficiency of ships easier to benchmark for comparison.
In 2010, the Hapag-Lloyd “Vienna Express” was the very first ship in the world to receive an EEDI certificate.

Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM)

Safe and environmentally sound ship recycling

Hapag-Lloyd has already set itself the task of voluntarily equipping all newbuilds with the so-called inventory of hazardous materials (IHM).

The IHM is a certified record which details all of the materials built in to a vessel which may pose a threat to health or to the environment. An up-to-date IHM will enable all these materials to be located and disposed of safely. This ensures that vessels are recycled in a safe and environmentally friendly way. The IHM must be updated if any changes are made to the vessel.

Once again, Hapag-Lloyd is well ahead of regulation here because the IHM will first become mandatory worldwide in a few years.
